I had been working in a tattoo shop for months before I heard the name Dan Higgs, but I had seen his influence in almost every tattoo. Not only were his tattoos influential, but they were worn on the walls and by the tattooers themselves. I would eventually also wear Dan Higgs tattoos, done by other artists who also loved his work.
Dan Higgs stopped tattooing before I had the chance to be tattooed by him. I was told it was because the internet came around and changed tattooing in a way that he didn't like. I don't think it matters why he stopped, but what does matter is his impact.
When I hear his name or see his tattoos on my body, I'm reminded of the stories told to me by other tattooers. They would share his name and mention something they took away from his art, like "tattooing is a folk art, made for the people" or "traditional tattooing doesn't just need to be pinups and eagles". These ideas will forever influence the way I understand tattooing.
